Every once in a great while, a bowling ball manufacturer comes out with a ball that really changes the game. Columbia is one of the manufacturers, who over the last several years, has remained relatively quiet. Although their lineup always contained decent reacting equipment, they never really had a "Great" ball in their lineup. That time has come to an end, and now Columbia has come out with a ball that I believe will be this years "Blockbuster". The new Pure Physics is amazing. I don't know how they did it, whether its the core, the shell, or a combination of both, but this ball really defies the laws of physics. Over the course of writing reviews on ballselector, I don’t normally get too excited over equipment, after all, I usually throw dozens of balls a year, and I am not on anyones staff, so I give a fair, unbiased opinion. I have even been accused of being too critical by some of the equipment manufacturers. This ball is certainly the exception, in 35 years of bowling, this may be the best ball I have ever put in my hand, period.
The Pure Physics is definitely a home run for Columbia, it is the complete package. From looks to reaction, the Pure Physics dominates the lanes. Out of the box, the Pure Physics utilizes the Full Swing core, wrapped with Columbia's Full Tilt 7.5 coverstock, with a 2000 Abralon matte finish. Normally, whenever I get a dull ball, I have to polish it to get it through the heads. When I was drilling this ball, a friend of mine (a Columbia staff member), said not to bother, it will get down the lanes dull. Of course I didn't believe him, but left it dull anyway. He was right, this ball gets through the heads, even dull, without rolling out, and does not lose anything on the backends. I literally was able to play this ball anywhere on the lane I wanted, and no matter how bad I threw it, the ball recovered. Even if I yanked it in, the ball would hold back long enough to hit the pocket.
Ball Test - Earl Anthony Pattern The Earl Anthony Pattern places a premium on execution and repetition, qualities which Earl Anthony exemplified. This 40 foot pattern has a unique design in which the oil widens, as opposed to narrows, down the lane. Generally, when a pattern requires more accuracy, the less boards you cover the better. I started out playing 25-15 with the ball, as I did the other balls I tested. This ball clearly opened up the lane. I have NEVER thrown a ball on this difficult a pattern, and actually opened up the lane that much. It appeared I had 6-7 boards to play with, and still hit the pocket. Of course, it was nowhere as open as the house shot, but I did have significantly more room than any other ball on that pattern.
When to Use this Ball This is easy, anywhere. I haven't found a time NOT to use this ball. The ball is super versatile. There are many combinations of surface and drilling patterns that will allow you to use this ball on any condition.
Conclusion Columbia has ended its hiatus by coming out with its greatest ball since the white dot. I expect this ball to be a huge seller this year, and rightfully so. The Pure Physics is clearly the ball other manufacturers will be trying to mimic. It’s nice to see Columbia once again lead the industry, instead of following the pack. I would be interested in hearing other comments if you have this ball, what you like and dislike. Login and Comment below!
